Van Gogh signatures allow you to perceive a relationship with the work. Sometimes red and well visible, sometimes discreet or hidden between brushstrokes, the Vincent signature - or abbreviation Vt - appears in only 133 of the 840 paintings by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), representing just over 15% of the total of his artistic production, made in his last ten years of life. Julia Engelmayer recalls that the painter, who only started signing his paintings in 1884, was very critical of his work and considered much of his work as exercises or preparatory studies.
Furthermore, Engelmayer states that van Gogh's letters show that he was particularly proud of paintings such as "The Potato Eaters" (1885), which he considered his first masterpiece: he wrote "Vincent" on the back of a chair, although the signature is now almost invisible. He also signed works intended for family, friends or exchanges with other artists, although a unique case is "Three Pairs of Shoes" (1886), exchanged with Australian painter John Russell, which contains two signatures: a small one, van Gogh style, and a larger one with Russell-like handwriting - which suggests that the Australian painter may have added the most visible signature. In a March 1888 letter addressed Theo, van Gogh asked his name to appear publicly as he wrote it on the screens: "Vincent and not van Gogh", for the "excellent reason" that people could not pronounce the nickname.
